Unless "Scotty" can engineer an antimatter miracle, it looks like STREK INTO THE DARK will get less of a domestic theatrical gross than FAST 'N' FURIOUS PART 6: NEPHEW OF FURIOUS.

When Gene Roddenberry first walked into your office, what did you think?

HERB SOLOW: I thought he walked very slowly and mumbled a lot, actually, [laughter]. I had expected.....what I had known about Gene was that he was a former Los Angeles policeman and bomber pilot. That he was a former Pan American airline pilot. And he just finished doing a one year series on the United States Marine Corps. I figured someone who was very sharply dressed who would snap his way into the office and stand at attention. He kind of came in sloppy and mumbled. So I figured this is a very special person, actually. Gene gave me a piece of paper he was holding, and it had just had the basic concept of STREK. I thought some of it was good and a lot of it I did not like. That's how it all started.

Good kwestion, usey.  Here's sum infotaining:

• According to Leonard Nimoy, when he met President Barack Obama, he was greeted with the Vulcan salute. In addition, Obama also asked that the new Strek movie be screened at the White House.
• Colin Powell, the former Secretary of State, is a fan of Strek and even visited the set of The Next Generation. Another famous American politician who visited the set of The Next Generation (TNG) was Ronald Reagan, which he did in 1991. He even remarked that he liked Klingons because they remind him of Congress.
• King Abdullah II of Jordan is a heavyduty fan and even appeared in an episode of Strek Voyagers.
• The former Vice President of the United States, Al Gore, watched Strek heavily while in college and after he lost to Dubby.
• Scooter Libby can name off all of the Original Strek episodes (TOS), while also remembering the plot lines of each one.
• Stephen Harper, the leader of Canada, has admitted to being a fervent Trekker.

The pinhed (who has more influence over policy makers then they will admit) thinks the new Spock is very close to the mark and that the franchise has the potential to live long and prosper. Smile

p.s. The pinhed is also a fan of Zoe Yadira Saldaña Nazario, and expects to see more making out with Spock in future episodes. What a Face

Grushchenka (who does not post because she is always stuck somewhere like Tblisi or Almaty writing press releases) says that Strek has all the types of humanity in its cast, and that the pinhed is Spock.

Spock is sexier than many suspect, and Zoe will soon know that if she doesn't already. What a Face

Casual fans like Lopez might be surprised to learn that the Uhura-Spock romance from the recent "alternate timeline" flims has its origins in The Original Series (TOS).  Uhura was conceived to be a more signif character than she turned out to be on TOS ( as was Sulu ) and in the first few episodes you can see Uhura make futile attempts to flirt with First Officer Spock.  Uhura also gets a slambang musical number early on, accompanied by spockrocking vulcanian lute

ShatFax: The Schattner family name appears to belong to,  at least,  two distinct families.  One family is Jewish and comes from the town of Kuty  (or Kitev in Yiddish) which is currently part of the Ukraine.  The other Schattner family is located primarily in Germany, Austria and the Midwest of the United States and is not Jewish.  There are genealogical records for this Schattner family going back to at least 1665 in Germany.

Because of the limited geneological records in Eastern Europe - especially for Jews - information about the Schattner family prior to the early 1800s is virtually non-existent. The origin of the Schattner name is obscure as well.  Most members of the family appear to believe that the name stems from the German word "Schatten" meaning shadow.  However an alternative explanation in the "Encyclopedia of Jewish Names" suggests that the name Schattner came from the Polish word "szata" meaning garment.  This interpretation appears plausible especially since several of the Schattners of the 19th century appear to have been in the garment business. Yet another claimed origin comes from an old German genealogical book which claims that the name Schattner comes from old Lower German word "Schatter" meaning appraiser or money collector.

In the 1800's, essentially all of the Schattners appear to have lived in the village of Kuty.   Kuty is located at the base of the Carpathian Mountains on the Czermosz River on the border between the provinces of Bukovina and Galicia. The nearest city of any size is Czernovtsy.  A good map of this area is available on the Web. (Kuty is in the lower right corner of the map - it is located approximately 50 km west of Czernovitz).   At various times in the last two centuries, Kuty has been part of Poland, Austria-Hungary, Roumania, the Soviet Union and the Ukraine.

Kuty was a small town of approximately 5000 people.  In medieval times, Kuty was for seven years the home of the Jewish scholar, Baal Shem Tov.  At the turn of the twentieth century approximately half of the population was Jewish.  Many left Kuty during World War I and in the years between the World Wars.  The Jews who remained were killed in the Holocaust.  At present there are essentially no Jews in Kuty.  There are two good books available on Jewish life in Kuty prior to World War II - "The Kuty Memorial Book" written after World War II by the survivors from Kuty in Israel and "Kitov, My Hometown - Survivors of Kuty Tell the Story of their Hometown" by Chiam Zins.  Unfortunately these books are available only in Yiddish and Hebrew respectively.

The most consistent characteristic of the members of the Schattner family in the 19th and early 20th century appears to be how religious they were.  Nearly every branch of the family remembers at least one rabbi or scholar among their ancestors.  Some of these scholars achieved considerable respect in the community.

For example, the Kuty Memorial Book contains two references to the Schattners:

   * "Rabbi Chaim Schattner who had a reputation of the best scholar of Kitev.  He mainly tutored privately and later became principal of Kitev Talmud Torah."
   * "Until the beginning of WWI there was an excellent Hebrew School in Kitev under the supervision of the highly educated Hebraist Rabbi Yakov Schattner.  His students, boys and girls, were among the first who popularized modern Hebrew literature and created the basis for the next generation of Jewish youth." Note: this Yakov Schattner is the son of Joseph Schattner

Around the turn of the century a few members of the family such as Philip Schattner, Joseph David Schattner, Joseph Schattner and Wolfe Shatner immigrated to the United States and Canada.  Their descendents form the majority of the Schattner family members in the US and Canada today.

Several other branches of the family moved to Vienna at the time of World War I and lived there until they were forced to flee during World War II.  A page from the 1936 Viennese telephone book shows the addresses of several of the family members who lived in Vienna at that time.  Other members of the family moved to Palestine, Shanghai, Australia, Switzerland and South America during this time period often for the purpose of escaping the Holocaust.  As a result descendents of the Schattner Family of Kuty can now be found in - at least - 11 countries (US, Canada, Israel, Venezuela, Argentina, Italy, Australia, Brazil, Singapore, Peru, England).  However scores of other Schattners perished during the Holocaust in Europe.

Probably the best known member of the Schattner Family is William Shatner, the noted actor and entertainer.  Bill's grandfather changed the spelling to Shatner and changed his first name to Wolfe which he thought was more fitting to The New World.  WOLFE SHATNER- Bill says WOLFE SHATNER was a CANADIAN ORIGINAL just like Bill is.  Unlike Leslie Nielsen, Shatner has never become an American citizen despite living in USA since the six-ties.

This is certainly the correct explanation, and it means that Schattner is directly linked to the name "Portnoy," which means "Tailor," except that the Schattners were more involved in marketing and distribution, rather than production.

Bones was right the first time.  Spock mind-melded with Kollos, a Medusan, in a middling Season 3 sode. The Medusans were a telepathic non-corporeal race. Their thoughts were pretty far-out, but their physical appearance was so utterly hideous that the sight of a Medusan rendered any Hu-man mad, and soon afterward caused death by you know, massive organ failure. Vulcans were capable of viewing Medusans, but only with the use of a specially filtered visor. For these reasons, Medusans usually used an opaque carrier pod when interacting with other species. The Medusans were renowned for their navigational abilities.

Up to the Minute

Why did Strek's new mastermind want to kill production of classic Strek products?

J.J. Abrams and his production company Bad Robot have been very good for Strek from a business standpoint. Even if you don't like the movies, you can't argue with the financial results of their work, but according to TheWrap's sources, things could have been much, much bigger. Back when they first took over the franchise, Bad Robot had plans to turn Strek into a major transmedia experience, telling their stories across films, television, comics, videogames and more, much more, much much more eh. So far we've had a few comics and we've had a videogame or two or whatever, but apparently the company wanted to really really just you know push things to like warp speed and make Strek an inescapably massive multimedia franchise once again. So why blooming didn't they?

Well, Strek rights are tricky business. They're split between Paramount Pictures (which distributes the new films and owns the rights to the old ones) and CBS (which owns the rights to the original 1960s TV series, as well as merchandising rights). Ever since CBS left Paramount's parent company Viacom seven years ago, the two companies have had to work in semi-harmony when it comes to new Strek projects, including Abrams' films. And apparently that's where Bad Robot had a problem. According to an "individual" who knows the situation, Paramount wanted to make Abrams and company happy, but it also allowed CBS to have a say in what new Strek projects were produced, and apparently CBS wasn't too keen on some of the ambitious things Bad Robot wanted to do.

"J.J. just threw up his hands," TheWrap's source said. "The message was, 'Why set up all this when we'll just be competing against ourselves?' The studio wanted to please Bad Robot, but it was allowing CBS to say yay or nay when it came to what was happening with the Strek products."

It seems Bad Robot did some market research and found that the merchandise being produced to promote its rebooted Strek universe was actually the victim of brand confusion with the merchandise CBS was (and is) still producing to promote the original Strek series. In an effort to better push the new stuff (and probably raise awareness that they wanted to make more toys/comics/TV shows and other such goodies), Bad Robot went to CBS and asked them to cease production on original series products so consumers wouldn't have to choose between buying something with Bill Shatner's face on it and something with Chris Pine's face on it. But CBS wasn't about to give up the $20 million it earns from Strek merch every year, and in response Bad Robot put many of its transmedia plans on hold.

But while the dispute may be over, the consequences of it may be just beginning. According to TheWrap, the inability to do everything he really wanted with Strek may have been one of the biggest factors that drove Abrams over to the G. Lucas Presents The Space Wars franchise, where it looks like the Walt Disney Company will be more than happy to accommodate all his merchandise-friendly multimedia ambitions for stuff like TV shows, theme park attractions and more.

“Disney has always been oriented to multi-platform revenue stream situations,” Seth Willenson, a film library valuations expert, told TheWrap.

Latebreaker...

J.J. Abrams admits to self-destructive addiction
Tribble Tribune

J.J. Abrams apologized to Star Trek fans for the amount of lens flares in Star Trek into Darkness.

His realization that there were too many lens flares in Star Trek into Darkness came about after he showed his wife an early version of the movie.

“I know I get a lot of grief for that,” he said. “But I’ll tell you, there are times when I’m working on a shot, I think, ‘Oh this would be really cool … with a lens flare.’ But I know it’s too much, and I apologize. I’m so aware of it now. I was showing my wife an early cut of Star Trek Into Darkness and there was this one scene where she was literally like, ‘I just can’t see what’s going on. I don’t understand what that is.’ I was like, ‘Yeah, I went too nuts on this.’”

“This is how stupid it was,” said Abrams. “I actually had to use ILM [Industrial Light & Magic] to remove lens flare in a couple of shots, which is, I know, moronic. But I think admitting you’re an addict is the first step towards recovery.”
