A group of climate scientists (including 6 of my neighbors) have come up with a surefire way to suppress climate deniers--prosecute them under the RICO (Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations) Act.

Dear President Obama, Attorney General Lynch, and OSTP Director Holdren,

As you know, an overwhelming majority of climate scientists are convinced about the potentially serious adverse effects of human-induced climate change on human health, agriculture, and biodiversity. We applaud your efforts to regulate emissions and the other steps you are taking. Nonetheless, as climate scientists we are exceedingly concerned that America’s response to climate change – indeed, the world’s response to climate change – is insufficient. The risks posed by climate change, including increasing extreme weather events, rising sea levels, and increasing ocean acidity – and potential strategies for addressing them – are detailed in the Third National Climate Assessment (2014), Climate Change Impacts in the United States. The stability of the Earth’s climate over the past ten thousand years contributed to the growth of agriculture and therefore, a thriving human civilization. We are now at high risk of seriously destabilizing the Earth’s climate and irreparably harming people around the world, especially the world’s poorest people.

We appreciate that you are making aggressive and imaginative use of the limited tools available to you in the face of a recalcitrant Congress. One additional tool – recently proposed by Senator Sheldon Whitehouse – is a RICO (Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations Act) investigation of corporations and other organizations that have knowingly deceived the American people about the risks of climate change, as a means to forestall America’s response to climate change. The actions of these organizations have been extensively documented in peer reviewed academic research (Brulle, 2013) and in recent books including: Doubt is their Product (Michaels, 2008), Climate Cover-Up (Hoggan & Littlemore, 2009), Merchants of Doubt (Oreskes & Conway, 2010), The Climate War (Pooley, 2010), and in The Climate Deception Dossiers (Union of Concerned Scientists, 2015). We strongly endorse Senator Whitehouse’s call for a RICO investigation.

The methods of these organizations are quite similar to those used earlier by the tobacco industry. A RICO investigation (1999 to 2006) played an important role in stopping the tobacco industry from continuing to deceive the American people about the dangers of smoking. If corporations in the fossil fuel industry and their supporters are guilty of the misdeeds that have been documented in books and journal articles, it is imperative that these misdeeds be stopped as soon as possible so that America and the world can get on with the critically important business of finding effective ways to restabilize the Earth’s climate, before even more lasting damage is done.

Sincerely,

THE DEBATE IS OVER--ALL WE HAVE TO DO NOW IS DELIVER THE CASH.

So, the US at some international conference said that we'd deliver $100 billion to help the developing countries fight climate change.

But, on second thought: "The US also asked that the economic reality at present should be taken into consideration, while asking countries to contribute to the climate funds."

Some wag on the internet wrote this:

"Hello Poor Developing Nations,
You will perhaps recall that we were considering offering you a massive bribe in exchange for your compliance with our current set of delusional priorities here in the west.
Notable for your complicit agreement with the CAGW delusion which has recently become the primary concern of the rich western academic and bureaucratic elite.
We are struggling in our attempts to collect up the required bribe money.
We wanted to ask if, whilst we fished around for the cash…COULD YOU POSSIBLY BRIBE YOURSELVES?
This would be greatly appreciated.
With love and kisses, from the rich Imbeciles who came up with this bullshit."

Speaking of more effective brainwashing techniques, pinhedz music CD has been used for many dance recital videos, dramatic presentations and Greek chamber-of-commerce pitches and restaurant commercials--but now, for the first times, pinhedz music is used for a GLOBAL WARMING EDUCATIONAL VIDEO.

We are on the verge of a climate summit in Paris. Bolivia is prepared with a solution to the climate crisis:

"Structural solutions to the climate crisis

1. Adoption of a new model of civilization in the world without consumerism, war-mongering, and mercantilism, a world without capitalism; build and consolidate a world order of Living Well that defends and promotes the integral rights of our peoples, undertaking the path of harmony with nature and respect for life.

2. Construction of a climate system based on responsibility to Mother Earth, thec ulture of life and the full realization of humanity in their holistic development, humanizing the economy, surpassing the simplistic approach to decarbonization of the economy.

3. Protection of the Rights of Mother Earth in anarticulated and complementary manner to the rights of peoples to their development.

4. Defense of universal common goods such as the seas and oceans, water, atmospheric space, as well as the technological monopoly, promoting people's access to the common heritage.

5. Elimination of patents on technologies and recognition of the human right to science and technology of life.

6. Effective implementation by governments of the human right to water.

7. Establishment of the International Court of Justice Climate and Mother Earth to enable countries to fulfill their international commitments to climate change in a
context of respect for the rights of peoples and of Mother Earth.

8. Allocate the resources of the military machinery of the imperial powers and the war-mongers to finance the activities of the peoples against climate change.

9. Eradication of commodification of nature and carbon markets promoting business climate millionaires, which do not solve the problem of the climate crisis.

10. Decolonize natural resources environmental colonial biased views that see the peoples of the South as forest rangers of Northern countries and communities as enemies of
nature."

But that's nothing--as of 1941, global warming was responsible for Hitler, and by 1976, the CIA said we were heading into the next ice age:

Albert says it's too hot for the Saami to herd reindeer in Northern Norway.

Never mind that they've been herding them since way back when Norway was tropical.

And never mind that when it got cold a few centuries ago all the Norwegians started saving up to buy tickets to America.

Albert wants to turn the clock back to 1815, when everybody was freezing to death:

In response to Albert's latest political and social-science copy-pastes, the pinhed has this to say:

pinhead wrote:No one can deny or minimize the hardships caused by years of drought in California.

But my focus here is on causality, which is too often taken as a given without justification. The body with the most authority is the IPCC, because it is the international consensus body. The assessments of the IPCC represent a consensus reached between the national academies of science of all the countries that participate in the consensus reports.

On the subject of drought, the IPCC has this to say (in the 5th consensus report published in 2014):

“In summary, the current assessment concludes that there is not enough evidence at present to suggest more than low confidence in a global-scale observed trend in drought or dryness (lack of rainfall) since the middle of the 20th century due to lack of direct observations, geographical inconsistencies in the trends, and dependencies of inferred trends on the index choice. Based on updated studies, AR4 [the 4th consensus report] conclusions regarding global increasing trends in drought since the 1970s were probably overstated*. However, it is likely that the frequency and intensity of drought has increased in the Mediterranean and West Africa and decreased in central North America and north-west Australia since 1950”

And even if a robust global trend was confirmed, the question of causality would still remain.

THE DEBATE IS OVER -- IT'S TIME TO SAVE THE INDIGENOUS PEOPLES.

There are those who say pinhed has no heart. Sad Some have declared that pinhed has no soul. Crying or Very sad

The pinhedz own brother-in-law says: “You should be hating on the Koch brothers instead of obsessing over a pinheaded physics question.” Shocked

It’s true, the pinhed keeps trying to find the connection between fossil fuel emissions and temperature increase.

However, since one theme of this thread is the plight of the indigenous peoples, the pinhed wants to say something about his interactions with these wonderful people. Smile

Full disclosure—most summers the pinhed ends up tramping through snow (in mid-July), which is to say that the indigenous peoples the pinhed interacts with are not of the equatorial persuasion. They are mostly living in Norway, Montana, Alaska and sometimes Minnesota.

Instead of asking white journalists what the indigenous people want and need, the pinhed has asked the people themselves.

What do they say they need?—central heating and motor vehicles. The white journalists want them to preserve their traditional nomadic lifestyles, dragging reindeer-hide tents from place to place, but the journalists do not want this lifestyle for themselves—they want it to be preserved BY SOMEBODY ELSE.

And what (I hear you asking) do the indigenous people have to say about cold and ice? They say this--this is not what the white journalists have to say about glaciers--this is what the Tlinkit Indians (white journalists call them “Native Americans," but the Tlinkit Indians have not learned that language yet) have to say about glaciers:

At this time, there was a feast. All the people went to the feast. Kaasteen could not go to the feast. In those days, parents did not take their children out. Her mother gave her some sockeye strips.
Kaasteen began to eat the dryfish. She broke the strips [of dried fish] into pieces. Suddenly, Kaasteen lifted the edge of the wall [tent]. She put her hand outside. She had dryfish in her hand. She called, “Hey glacier, here, here, here, here. Hey glacier, here, here, here, here.”
A young girl heard Kaasteen calling to the glacier. She was the only witness to see Kaasteen calling to the glacier.

All of a sudden, the earth shook. People thought it was an earthquake. Again and again, the earth shook. Suddenly, the people realized it was not an earthquake. Ice was crushing against itself. The glacier was moving towards the village.
Kaasteen had broken a taboo. She called the glacier as she would call a dog. That was taboo.
The glacier entered the village. The glacier knocked over houses. The people were scared.
“Quick, let’s get out of here,” they yelled.
They decided to take Kaasteen with them. However, Kaasteen refused to leave. The people tried to persuade Kaasteen to leave with them. Still, Kaasteen would not leave. So, the people brought Kaasteen food and clothing.
Suddenly, an older woman named Shaawatséek’ pushed Kaasteen’s door open.
“I will stay,” she said. “I am old. I will volunteer to take Kaasteen’s place!”
However, Kaasteen said, “No, I am staying here!” So, the people reluctantly left Kaasteen behind.
As the people drifted away, they saw Kaasteen’s house tip over. The glacier tipped the house over. Kaasteen’s mother screamed. The other women screamed too. The people stood up in their boats. They were crying.
Kaasteen was dying and they could not help. They sang two songs. Kaasteen’s house was pushed into the ocean.
The Wooshkeetaan settled in Excursion Inlet.
The Kaagwaantaan settled in Ground Hog Bay.
The Chookaneidí settled by a river called Lakooxas’t’aakhéen. This is how it was.

— Tlingit Migration Story, told by Choo-Kneidi clan, translated by Nora Dauenhauer, excerpted from Haa Shuka, Our Ancestors. Sealaska Heritage Institute, Juneau, and University of Washington Press, 1987.

So, all you white big-city Americans, who think that glaciers are warm and fuzzy, the indigenous peoples do not agree with you. The Tlingit know what it is like to face down a glacier, they have seen their loved ones perish because of glaciation — You have not.

Right now there are people in Paris loudly declaring “THE LITTLE ICE AGE WAS ONLY LOCAL!”

Tell it to Kaasteen’s mother.
