Anybody seen it? Judging by the trailer, it looks like something the pinhed wrote. Razz

The critics say it's too long, and besides, they got confused; I liked it tho (it's either profound, or pseudo-profound, one of those). geek

DEATH--LIFE--BIRTH

All things are connected ... when one door closes, another opens ... we keep making the same mistakes over and over ... our lives, our choices, each encounter suggest a new potential direction ... we cross and recross our old tracks like figure skaters ... the phenomena that determine the course of our lives--these forces begin long before we are born and continue after we perish ... our lives are not our own, we are bound to others, past and present ... yesterday you would never have done what you did today ...

Do you want the true-true? It could be the film of David Mitchell’s Cloud Atlas is dumb-dumb. Andy and Lana Wachowski (the latter once Larry) and Tom Tykwer have seized hold of Mitchell’s literary tour de froth, passed it through the Benihana chopper, and extruded the most jaw-droppingly woo-woo piece of sci-fi romantic drivel since The Fountain.

From the start of the movie, we get a hash of crisscrossing plots tied together with music (in a desperate attempt at fluidity) and featuring the same actors with laughably egregious makeup jobs. Our dawning awareness in the book of all the echoes and crosscurrents becomes fast-food metaphysics on a cartoony canvas. Put it all together and you’ve got multiple B-movies bicycle-pumped into something supposedly momentous.

The cinematography is indifferent, and the editing too on the nose, but it’s the acting that’s the shocker. The cast comes off like a third-rate stock company on the matinee after the night on which everyone got bombed on mescal (and possibly mescaline). And do you think viewers who haven’t read the book will know what’s going on (assuming they can understand the dialogue, much of which the soundtrack garbles)? It’s all flash cards until the last movement, when such lines as “My life exists far beyond the limitations of me” are like Buddhist placards.

Film is a medium of surfaces, and yet all manner of artists have found ways to gesture toward that which cannot be pinned and wriggling on the wall. The problem is that, for all their mysticism, the Wachowskis are very literal-minded—perhaps even materialists. I admire their daring—and, hell, I didn’t hate watching the movie, although I had a lot of bad laughs at its expense. Only the language grated. When Hanks’s little girl said, “Mama, I hungry,” I wanted to find that missing verb and beat the screenwriters over the head with it. Also, Whishaw’s “What happened between Vyvyan and I …” shouldn’t happen to you, me, or anyone in a $100 million-plus movie.

This is a very important consideration. Above all, we must make sure that the ATU movie gets a talented director, one with vision and imagination, one who avoids the pitfalls that would lead to failure. bounce

That is sadly true, and it was language associated with supposedly educated people. Neutral

But I used to know a school teacher who committed the same error repeatedly (some school teachers consider the word "me" to be ungrammatical no matter what the part of speech scratch ).

Hey user, does this mean you've read the book?
If so, how did you rate it?
I've been away from electronic media.
I've rediscovered books.
Is Cloud Atlas a good one?

wha, the only books I "read" are audiobook read by Sean Penn. But keep in mind, CLOUD ATLAS, the book, contains references to the motion picture "SOYLENT GREEN IS MADE OF PEOPLE (still haven't changed recipe)."

But these are Cloud Minders:

A TV thriller about Pilgrims eating eels.

What's the large deal about those pilgrims anyhow?

Oh, the Yanqs wanted to hoop and holler about the Pilgrims so to usurp attention away from the more Originatoring Tsenacommacahian James Town which had African slaves, and also doddering polacks which Ben & Jerry's Ice Cream Co. of Vermont dis approved of of. Also the puritans are made to be trumpeted because they manifest Sanctimonious Blowhard-ry which forms basis of the mercan policital discourses ... and also as well the pilgrims were seized upon during civil war era for the national unity dish of the sweet potatas with maples syrup.

Thanks user.
I googled 'cloud atlas soylent green' to verify your comment (never being sure if you mean to be taken at face value)

Google returned: You’ll catch echoes of a hundred other pop touchstones, from "Roots" to Guy Ritchie films to "Soylent Green."

Thanks for the verifiable information.
Will you offer an opinion?
Is the book worth reading or is it, well, not?
