Politicization of science--real or alleged?

Post  pinhedz on Wed Oct 24, 2012 10:41 am

Harry Truman informs us that a prominent author on climate change named Steve Goreham is funded by Exxon.

The implication is that--since Harry dug up this dirt on the scientist--we must now dismiss any research that Goreham has done as a scientist.

But the pinhed can't help wondering, has anyone found any errors in Goreham's work? And isn't that what matters? geek

Woo wants to know "Who the heck are you talking to on the science thread? There ain't no one home!"

Well, sir, I reckon I'm talking to the 17 folks that read this thread since yesterday. Razz

Here's the thing--ten or 15 years ago the IPCC was almost universally respected for their "scienced-based" conclusions about global warming/climate change.

But since then it's been found that the conclusions don't hold up under close scrutiny; the IPCC's great castle was built on sand. Shocked

And what is the IPCC's response to scientific scrutiny? They call every study that disagrees with them an "Attack against Science." Rolling Eyes

Coffee used to be considered a vice in the same class as smoking and ripple wine. In fact, statistics do show that chain-smoking alcoholics drink a lot of coffee.

Careless population studies suggested that coffee drinkers died young, but failed to show that it was the booze and cigarettes that killed them, not the coffee. Rolling Eyes

So--the only option for the coffee industry was to fund studies that would remove the confounding factors and find the truth--that coffee is actually the elixir of life! Shocked

Yes, it's true, the studies showing the health benefits if coffee are funded by the coffee industry!

But that's the good science--who else was going to do it?

And now it comes out that geologists--who are accustomed to examining changes in the earth over periods of millions of years (instead of just centuries) have turned out to be the ones that debunk the link between CO2 and global warming.

And geologists all work for oil companies! Shocked (Who else would they work for?)

But they're one's doing the good science. bounce

It has been implied that non-government organizations (NGOs) are politicized by their sponsors--who give them their cash.

But does it follow that federal agencies are not politicized, considering that their "sponsor" is the current administration, which has a political agenda just as surely as any lobbying group?

One federal agency--The Arms Control and Disarmamant Agency--was created by Jimmy Carter and ultimately completely eliminated by the Republicans for being pro-arms-control.
