Scientists in a state of panic over rapid accumulation of Antarctic ice cap

Post  pinhedz on Wed Oct 03, 2012 11:03 am

It has come to light that the North Pole has 1 to 2 percent of the earth's ice--and it's shrinking. However, the South Pole has 90% of the Earth's ice, and it spreading like wild fire. affraid

This little known fact is being kept under wraps. Suspect

I copied this from somewhere (I forget from where, but it might be true--one never knows):

"The Amundsen-Scott station is the current American scientific research station at the South Pole. For more than 50 years, the United States has maintained a continuous presence at the South Pole. The Amundsen-Scott station is the third U.S. station. The first two stations were buried by accumulating snow. Every year, the South Pole receives a net snow accumulation of about eight inches. The current station is modular and supported on stilts. It can be jacked up every year above the accumulating snow to prolong its life."

Meanwhile, up there at the tiny little Arctic ice sheet, the ice--like "The little engine that could"--is trying hard to work it's way back up to the 2007 level.

Will it succeed? Neutral

Here's how the Antarctic sea ice is growing--20 million sq kilometers makes the north pole look pretty bad. Neutral

But the sea ice nothing compared to the build-up on land. affraid

Do we have data concerning the ice covering the Antartic land?

The "anecdotal" info is what I posted about the two buried US stations and the 8-inch annual increase that makes it necessary to jack up the Amundson-Scott station every year.

That's not real quantitative data (other than the 8-inch number), of course, and the pinhed is always demanding quantitative data, so I reckon I'll dig some up evventually. geek

One thing we can see--assuming the percentage figures are correct (1-2% for the north and 90% for the south) are correct--is that those percentages have little to do with sea ice, because the sea ice figures are less than 20 million square kilometers in the south (winter maximum) and about 12 million for the north (also winter maximum).

Obviously, for the south to have 90% of the ice, there has to be many times more on land, because 12/20 is nothing like 1-2/90.

Another thing that's surprising is that, for the south to have 90% of the ice, it has to have much more than Greenland has--and Greenland's ice is miles thick.

That thought inspired my question. Smile

Full disclosure--I've been somewhat recklessly repeating info from an article by one Steve Goreham published in this periodical:

http://www.phillyburbs.com/news/local/courier_times_news/opinion/oped/sounding-the-ice-cap-alarm-while-ignoring-the-elephant/article_684f4bf8-2319-5072-b360-f64beae40064.html

He seems to have his own political agenda, and I have not yet checked to see what kind of credentials he has (if any). Suspect

I will be checking in short order, however. study
