There seems to be some disagreement over whether the main culprit is carbon or sulfur--but they both come from car exhaust anyway.

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) web sites both blame acid rain primarily on sulfur dioxide (SO2) and nitrogen oxides (NOx).

But all of the journalistic pieces that discuss the acid rain threat to reef ecosystems blame the threat on carbonic acid due to CO2. Are reefs dissolved by carbonic acid--mild as it is--but not by sulfuric acid, nasty as it is?

That might be the case, but I think I must have slept through that class. study
