This wasn't his first hit - but it was his first no. 1 - US and UK - in 1957. He took a lotta sales off Charlie Gracie, whose original was also a no. 1 Stateside (only made no. 12 over here - bloody Brits ain't got no taste innit No Suspect )

Nah.  It isn't that the suits thought the demographic would need a lexicon, rather it was that the suits figured Williams' targeted demographic would think the rural reference was corny.
