What is the appropriate response to news of the death of a 'celeb' you found immensely irritating? The late Sir Jimmy, marathon runner and charity fundraiser was just such an individual. I don't think it's mentioned in the SkyNews obit below, but it transpires that Sir Jimmy enjoyed 13 Christmas dinners with Margaret and Denis Thatcher, 13 Christmas afternoons with his socks toasting by their yuletide hearth. Always thought there was something not quite right about the fellow:

Sir Jimmy To Lie In State At Leeds Hotel

The coffin carrying Sir Jimmy Savile will lie in state at a Leeds hotel so fans can pay their respects before his funeral.

The larger-than-life broadcaster's last wish was to be buried in a Scarborough Council cemetery, after his body goes on show to members of the public.

The eccentric entertainer, who died on Saturday at the age of 84, gave detailed instructions to family members who are "doing their best" to carry them out.

A source close to the arrangements told Sky News: "Jimmy didn't have an agent, so it's all been left to his family."

The function room of the Queens Hotel in Leeds City Square has been booked from 9.30am to 4pm next Tuesday, when hundreds of people are expected to file past Sir Jimmy's closed casket.

The funeral will be held the following day at St Anne's Cathedral in the city, before the burial in the Woodlands cemetery in Scarborough on Thursday.

"He wanted to be buried at 45 degrees so he can see the sea," said the source, who asked not to be named.

The DJ, broadcaster and charity fundraiser, died at his flat in his home town of Leeds on Friday - three days before his 85th birthday.

Family members said he died peacefully in his sleep. He was found by police on Saturday.

The Requiem Mass at St Anne's Cathedral on Wednesday is expected to be a very public celebration of his life.

It will be attended by friends from the world of showbusiness, representatives of the many charities he helped, as well as hundreds of members of the public.

Known for his trademark catchphrases, tracksuits, cigars and tinted glasses, friends and colleagues described Sir Jimmy as a "larger than life" character who was dedicated to charity work.

He started his working life as a miner in his native Yorkshire before running a series of clubs and working as a wrestler and DJ.

He presented the first episode of Top Of The Pops as well as his long-running show Jim'll Fix It.

Sir Jimmy Savile's Coffin Put In Leeds Bar
By Gerard Tubb, North of England correspondent

Fans of the late Sir Jimmy Savile have only one day left to visit the eccentric entertainer while he lies in state - in a Leeds hotel bar.

Before he died on October 29 the 84-year-old larger-than-life former disc jockey told his family they should lay him out in a gold casket and bury him on a tilt in a Scarborough council cemetery.

True to his wishes, staff at the Queens Hotel next to Leeds railway station will welcome Sir Jimmy's coffin through the front doors at 7am before it is placed in the hotel's main bar for the day.

Crowd control barriers are being erected outside in anticipation of the hordes expected to file past the closed coffin and a book of condolences when the doors open at 9.30am.

"Photographs can be taken (by public only), but mobile phones are to be on silent or switched off," a briefing note from the hotel explained.

"At 4:30pm the closed casket will be taken back to the funeral parlour, if there are still a lot of public waiting, then the viewing will be extended to 6.00pm at the latest."

In a further unconventional twist a live TV camera will be set up in the bar to stream pictures around the world.

The funeral will be held the following day at St Anne's Cathedral when hundreds of invited guests are expected to be joined by friends and well-wishers.

On Thursday, Sir Jimmy will be buried in the Woodlands cemetery in Scarborough which overlooks the resort's North Bay.

Sir Jimmy asked to be buried at a 45-degree incline - so that he can see the sea from his final resting place.

But still, as funerary rites go, it's not quite as eccentic as this approach:

Suspected Grave Robber 'Kept Dead As Dolls'

A Russian historian with an unusual interest in cemeteries has been arrested after police found more than 20 mummified corpses in his flat, all of which he had dressed in women's clothes.

The 45-year-old man, who apparently was open about his enthusiasm for the dead, had apparently been taking his work home with him.

Officers who searched his flat in the city of Nizhny Novgorod discovered 29 bodies clothed in bright dresses and headscarves, their hands and faces wrapped in what appeared to be cloth.

It was described as a macabre doll-like collection.

Instructions for doll-making were found in the apartment, police added, and there were also old-fashioned plastic dolls in frilly dresses lying about.

Investigators refused to name the man but identified him as a well-known specialist in the history of Nizhny Novgorod, about 250 miles east of Moscow.

Russian media reports said the man was Anatoly Moskvin, a local historian considered to be an expert on the city's cemeteries.

The arrest followed a long-running investigation into the desecration of graves at several cemeteries in Nizhny Novgorod beginning in 2010, police spokeswoman Svetlana Kovylina said.

Moskvin, a linguistic expert who has studied 13 languages, was well-known in the region for his bizarre fascination with graveyards.

He has authored several articles about cemeteries and historic sites in Nizhny Novgorod and only last month wrote for a publication on necrology to explain his interest in the dead.

Moskvin claimed that when he was 12, he came across a funeral procession whose participants forced him to kiss the face of a dead 11-year-old girl.

"An adult pushed my face down to the waxy forehead of the girl in an embroidered cap, and there was nothing I could do but kiss her as ordered," Moskvin wrote in Nekrolog.

Russia arrests "cemetery collector" with 29 bodies
By Guy Faulconbridge

MOSCOW (Reuters) - Russian police have arrested a man described by local media as the "cemetery collector" for digging up 29 corpses and dressing the remains in female clothing to display around his flat.

Grainy police video images of the man's cramped flat showed what look like several life-sized female dolls without faces, some with platinum blond wigs.

"During a search of his flat and garage, 29 self-made, life-size dolls dressed in the clothes of buried people were found," a spokesman for police in Nizhny Novgorod, 400 km (250 miles) east of Moscow, said on Tuesday.

"It was ascertained that he used mummified human bodies from graves to make them (the dolls)."

Police described the man, who was arrested following the desecration of graves in the area, as a local historian and an expert in the study of place names.

Media cited friends as saying they had never seen the dolls and that he was a learned, if eccentric, man.

I always thought him odd and annoying, but I wonder why these women have waited until he is dead to expose him?

If he had raped and abused young girls I thought they would have liked to have seen him go to prison?

"One woman's word against a TV icon", observes Esther Rantzen.

And he'd already been interviewed by police at least twice in the 1970's, but they'd decided there was "insufficient evidence" to bring charges.

His family and friends are said to be "disgusted and disappointed" with the allegations. With whom, I wonder? With JS?

Anthony Burgess' autobiography "Little Wilson and Big God" doesn't directly name JS (who was stll alive at the date of publication), but from his description he's clearly recognisable. Burgess thought him as creepy as I always have.

Radio 4 used to broadcast a great series called "In the Psychiatrist's Chair", which was presented by Dr Anthony Clare. When Saville was the interviewee, it struck me at the time that he was being evasive to the point of madness.
