Civil War re-enactment--the main problem

Post  pinhedz on Mon Aug 27, 2012 11:23 am

Here are some real American Civil War soldiers:

Here are some Civil War battle War re-enactors (curiously, they seem to be unaware that there is a problem):

On the other hand, this pic from an 1864 newspaper suggests that the new recruits might have had problems initially:

What we see above is a long-standing problem, but there is now a new problem emerging.

As we now know, some the soldiers that served in the Civil War turned out to be of the female persuasion, but they made a point of being passable:

It would have been too much of a distraction if the guys all wanted to date them:

I was surprised to see such hefty reenactors in Spielberg's movie:

Saw screenwriter Kushner on the tellentube talking about how Mary Todds got the bad wrap from history and the clips I've seen of ugg Sally Fields have made me cringed. Cattlescat, I think histo records make it pretty clear what she was- in many ways a good political partner for kooky Abe, but also an annoying mental shop-o-holic drammer queeen and not in an endearing cutesy Sally Fielding way.

Mary T. busted out of the looney bin after her son sent her there, and then she wrote a bunch of angry letters-to-the-editor denouncing the kid.

the problem with Civil War re-enactors as i recall is that they put much more effort into their costumes than in the battle maneuvers ... i remember at Roaring Camp Railroad grounds in Felton, the portly soldiers were shuffling and lollygagging all over the ho-hum field of battling  Neutral

the fairly celebrated John Fogerty decided to distill the essence of war enactment down to a few rollicking "rock them and sock them" minutes of a sound jam, he called it "Running Thru The Jungle" and your Cousin Brucie just loved it, he really did.  Fogerty was so mad that pets and the elderly suffer the most when man wages war on some other people, in a boat or on land, it doesnt even matter, people are the same whereever you go, though some are different, right?

There's a low-budget outfit in Richmond that's decided to make a Civil Movie entitled "The Field of Lost Shoes," with a cast consisting of troopers that are mostly under 40 years old and under 200 pounds:

Sam Peckinpah distinguished himself in Westerns television by going around and spilling shit on the set and actors and ripping their clothes to add authenticity. If you don't properly dilapidate the proceedings, it means you don't care, unless you clearly demarcate that your aesthetic is not one of naturalism but is rather Selznickian

Yeabut--those lads were recruited straight from the VMI (Virginia Military Institute)--the whole school was signed up probably right after morning inspection, where they made sure your boots were spit-shined.

But I'll check it out and make sure they all look authentic after they charge across the freshly-planted wheat field in the pouring rain--and the mud sucks all their shoes off.
