Liquid Luxury: Precept Winery's Red Decadence Chocolate Wine Pleases From Seattle to the East Coast

The pinhed doesn't usually sink this low, but the reviewers say it's the klassiest item at the wine brothel in Walla Walla. What a Face

" ... Remarkably, it’s quite good and enjoyable.  This wine is a red in a slutty Halloween costume.  Just like it’s bottle implies, it’s easy and fun, but not the kind of thing you want to bring home to mom and dad."

Verdict:  Alcoholic Tootsie Roll, Sweet Red,
Easy
Price: $8.99

Walla Walla, WA

The reviewers say it tastes like a tootsie roll, which is to say, irresistible.

Not liking tootsie rolls would be like not liking ABBA.

I can now publish my findings--don't get the chocolate wine unless you really like those chocolates with the oozy alcoholic liquid inside.

Since there aren't a lot of red wines that go with swai (and pinz doesn't drink white, because it all tastes like sour apple cider), I got a bottle of Beaujolais-Villages.

Mrs. pinz said: "It's not Georges Deboeuf, is it?" Suspect

-- "No, it's Louis Jadot." bounce

Only marginally better. Rolling Eyes

This is a public service announcement for all you young lads (and gals of the other orientation) out there.

Just because she's high maintenance, does that mean she's a woman of substance? No it does not. bounce

So think on that when you shop.

The wines made for French truck drivers don't seem to be much that better than the wines made for USA office parties.

Mrs pinz evaluates the new French truck-driver wine:

"It should be OK with the rice and beans. Maybe it should have gone into the rice and beans." Suspect

The prediction from those in the know is that 2014 WILL BE A GREAT YEAR FOR VIRGINIA WINES. What a Face

This year's growing season started with a late spring, making growers nervous, but mild temperatures and cool evenings throughout the summer helped grapes ripen evenly while maintaining acidity and moderate sugar levels. It rained enough to keep vines growing, but not too much. This will translate into elegant wines with ripe flavors.

Total Wines was allegedly selling this for $8.99, but the other day they were selling it for $2.97.

I saw this great bargain and figured "What could go wrong?" Very Happy

This would be great in a triple batch of rice and beans, but i made the mistake of tasting it.

6 dollars and 99 pennies:

90 pts. Vinous: December, 2015
Bright purple. Dark berry and floral scents are enlivened by a peppery element and a suggestion of smoky minerals. Coats the palate with sweet, smoke-accented boysenberry and cherry compote flavors; conveys very good energy for its depth. Harmonious tannins shape a long, broad finish that leaves blue fruit and peppery spice notes behind. There’s a lot going on here for the money, which has long been the case with this bottling. This wine was aged in stainless steel tanks.

87 pts. Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate: November, 2015
Another killer wine, the 2014 Garnacha is 85% Grenache and 15% Tempranillo. Totally fermented and aged in stainless steel, this cuvée of 15,000 cases is a world-class value if there ever was one. Coming from relatively high elevation, chalky alluvial vineyards, this wine has a deep ruby color, a big sweet kiss of licorice, kirsch liqueur and darker currants. It is medium-bodied, refreshing, exuberant and fruity, pure and lusty. Drink it over the next several years.

87 pts. Wine Spectator: February 29, 2016
Ripe, sweet flavors of raspberry and cherry mingle with cocoa and tangerine notes in this fruity red. Sweet-tart acidity keeps this lively, showing just enough tannins for grip. Drink now. 15,000 cases made.

Conte Priola Pinot Noir Delle Venezia, 2014

The intent, of course, is that the wines purchased for under $8.00 be great. But there are no guarantees.

JZ reports as follows:

"A Pinot noir from Venice, Italy??? Oh il mio dio!! Recommended by Cisco at Total Wine…Really Cisco? Barely tasted like a  pinot with a stemmy nose that also smelled like the canal (wonder why), and a filmy finish that stays on the tongue like some bad salami. $5.99 Total Wine JZ"
