Todd Duncan was the first ever porgy in "Porgy and Bess"

Gershwin wanted him to sound more mild than macho.

Duncan was not keen on doing "Broadway," and wasn't sure Gershwin was a serious enough composer for him. Rolling Eyes

Fun facts:

The show ran in 1935;

Gershwin died in 1937;

Todd Duncan lived until 1998;

Anne Brown lived until 2009. Shocked

Fun fact--Mrs. pinz just went to a voice lesson, and the voice teacher is a former pupil of Todd Duncan. Shocked
