Pinhead Wackerman liked the environs, but Paso Robles was not bustling like San Francisco. it was late in the day, and not a rooming house in sight.

Since Pinhead was already a felon, he figured that borrowing an equipage would not add seriously to his sins.

Pinhead -- "Good evening, Reverend Father."

Rev. Watson -- "Bless you, my son."

Pinhead -- "Would you have a place of rest for a weary traveler? A stable perhaps?"

Rev. Watson -- "Of course, my son. Please come in and rest your weary bones."

Pinhead -- "Thank you Father. My name is … Ignatius Paddock."

Rev. Watson -- "It is not my place to doubt that, my son, nor to judge those here on earth whom God will judge in due course."

Pinhead -- "I am grateful for your charity, Reverend Father, and for your discreteness."

Something didn't seem right. The Reverend Watson does not look Californian, and Pinhead wouldn't even have guessed he was Katolikisch. Suspect

Watson -- "You have arrived just in time for our humble repast. We have lamb's liver meatballs and leek soup."

Pinhead -- "Interesting--I have not had those dishes in this part of the country before, although I have had them in Baraboo, Wisconsin."

Watson -- "There are many here in California that come from faraway lands."

Pinhead -- "Yes, your accent is different. Are you Irish?"

Watson -- "I am who I am."

The Pinhead decided it was not in his interest to push the issue:

Pinhead -- "Well, they say this country is the great melting pot, don't they?" Cool

As they entered the dining room, Pinhead saw a beautiful young woman and a distinguished looking bearded gentleman.

The Reverend Watson ceremoniously announced:

Watson -- "We have another guest for dinner. Allow me to introduce Mr. Ignatius Paddock. Mr. Paddock, this is my niece, Amanda Chapman, and her cousin, Basil Andrews."

Pinhed Wackerman could not, of course, have recognized that "Amanda" and "Basil" were none other than the beautiful spy, Anna Kushchyenko and the dashing balalaika player, Vasily Vasilievich Andreyev.

However, he noted that the Reverend had enunciated the word "cousin" as if in quotes.

"Well," reckoned Pinhead, "I reckon it is not for me--Ignatius Paddock alias Pinhead Wackerman--to fault others for having multiple identities."

So, Mack, Felix and Bluemoon have crossed the line into California, but they're still a long ways from the coast.

They're going to need a place to stay.

Any suggestions?

They're a bit scruffy for Paso Robles, and a bit irreverent for the Reverend Watson (or is he really all that "reverend?" Suspect ).

Sure enough--it's Ned Alias Incognito. Shocked This could be a serious complication.

It might even interrupt the the Paso Robles balalaika-mandolin showdown.

Who knows if those disreputable hombres will ever find their way to the coast? Rolling Eyes

I reckon we'd just as well see what's up with dinner at Rev Watson's church:

pinhedz wrote:Pinhed Wackerman could not, of course, have recognized that "Amanda" and "Basil" were none other than the beautiful spy, Anna Kushchyenko and the dashing balalaika player, Vasily Vasilievich Andreyev.

However, he noted that the Reverend had enunciated the word "cousin" as if in quotes.

"Well," reckoned Pinhead, "I reckon it is not for me--Ignatius Paddock alias Pinhead Wackerman--to fault others for having multiple identities."
"Amanda" smiled graciously at Pinhead. "Basil" gave Pinhead a puzzled look and then asked Amanda:

Basil -- "Chto eto za chelovek?" scratch

Amanda [under her breath] -- "Molchi! Ty dolzhny byt' moyim dvoyurodnym bratom!" bounce

Then she looked back at Pinhead with the same dazzling smile. Very Happy

Pinhead -- "It's a pleasure to meet you. Are you from the same faraway land as your gracious uncle?"

Amanda -- "Da, konechno! … Of course!"

Pinhead -- "I consider myself very fortunate to be in such charming company for dinner."

The lamb's liver meatballs and leek soup were delicious. And the wine even more so. drunken

Pinhead -- "Is this a local wine? I understand California has lately started to produce wines that rival the best of the European products."

Watson -- "You are very discerning. I acquired this bottle yesterday from a man who is both a celebrated vintner and a man of the arts." Cool

Pinhead -- "I can scarcely believe my good fortune!" drunken drunken

Amanda -- "The vintner has become the most renowned citizen of Paso Robles, and the host of the most festive soirees. He is the famed pianist Paderewski--I'm sure you've heard of him."

Basil heard the name Paderewski and perked up:

Basil -- "Vot eto molodets!" Smile

Amanda [hissing in a whisper] -- "Ya skazal tebye molchi! Eto ya odna budu govarit'!" Mad

She smiled at Pinhead again, and said:

Amanda -- "Basil and I will be performing tomorrow at a soiree at the Paderewski estate! It will be the affair of the season!"

Pinhead -- "How marvelous! So are you musicians also?"

Amanda -- "Yes we are. Basil is the greatest balalaika virtuoso in the world, and I am his accompanist."

Watson -- "You should show him your instrument, my dear." Smile

Amanda -- "Of course!" Very Happy

She got up eagerly and came right back with a wonderful-looking contraption:

I think Amanda might be smiling at Pinhead all the time because he looks like Johnny Depp (she'd have no way of knowing about the money he stole from the Colt Firearms Co Suspect ).
But she might decide later he's a stuffed shirt; too soon to tell right now.

Amanda -- "You must come with us, Mr. Wackerman! The soiree will be ever so gay!" Very Happy

Pinhead -- "Gay?" Suspect

Amanda -- "That means full of jollity and good times!" Very Happy

Pinhead -- "Oh, yes, that's what I thought it meant!" silent

Amanda -- "Then it's settled--you will come as our guest!"

Pinhead -- "You are too kind, but I don't think I should impose. After all, the host is not expecting me." Neutral

Amanda -- "Set your mind at rest; you will be our guest, and our host expects us to bring our friends to enliven the festivities. I insist--you will see for yourself how gracious our host is."

Watson -- "And there will be other musicians as well. The Andrini Brothers with a program called 'Spanish Fantasy.' "

Pinhead -- "Are the Andrini brothers Spanish?" Suspect

Watson -- "How incongruous that they are not. But I've heard they have a beautiful dancer named "Usero Los Tuyos," who has created a sensation." What a Face

The Pinhead thought that the Reverend Watson's anticipation of seeing the beautiful Spanish dancer was a tad over-eager for a man of God. silent

Pinhead assumed that Paderewski's soiree would have only high-toned musicians.

But Paderewski was no stuffed shirt, and some of his favorite performers were those he had heard at some tough joints and saloons (these musicians would typically start playing after midnight when the guests were well primed drunken ).

There was the guitar wizard Richard Fitzgood, who was--though impecunious--a performer with an enthusiastic local following (he was on his way to giving up his bartending job).

He liked to start out with a Bach partita and gradually work his way to "Camptown Races" with all the unpublished verses about the real Camptown ladies. Shocked

Mack and Bluemoon decided they'd best go around Death Valley to the north. But then they reckoned they'd best go around Mount Whitney to the south.

This get complicated. scratch

When they got into some high elevations, the nights were a mite cold, so they built a nice roaring fire for the night.

Mack -- "Feliks, ain't you want ter sleep by the fire? It's gonna be a mite cold tonight!"

Feliks -- "No thanks, I reckon I'll just sleep in that there yonder abandoned mine shaft!"

Bluemoon -- scratch
