Re: Tempest
I've just caught up with this thread. These are great lyrics!
Lyrics to Tell Ol' Bill :
The river whispers in my ear
I've hardly a penny to my name
The heavens have never seemed so near
All my body glows with flame.
The tempest struggles in the air
And to myself alone I sing
It could sink me then and there
I can hear the echoes ring.
I tried to find one smilin' face
To drive the shadow from my head
I'm stranded in this nameless place
Lyin' restless in a heavy bed.
Tell me straight out if you will
Why must you torture me within?
Why must you come down off your high hill?
Throw my fate to the clouds and wind.
Far away in a silent land
Secret thoughts are hard to bear
Remember me you'll understand
Emotions we can never share.
You trampled on me as you passed
Left the coldest kiss upon my brow
All my doubts and fears have gone at last
I've nothing more to tell you now.
I walk by tranquil lakes and streams
As each new season's dawn awaits
I lay awake at night with troubled dreams
The enemy is at the gate.
Beneath the thunder-blasted trees
The words are ringin' off your tongue
The ground is hard in times like these
Stars are cold, the night is young.
The rocks are bleak, the trees are bare
Iron clouds go floatin' by
Snowflakes falling in my hair
Beneath the gray and stormy sky.
The evenin' sun is sinking low
The woods are dark, the town is too
They''ll drag you down, they run the show
Ain't no tellin' what they'll do.
Tell Ol' Bill when he comes home
Anything is worth a try
Tell him that I'm not alone
That the hour has come to do or die.
All the world I would defy
Let me make it plain as day
I look at you now and I sigh
How could it be any other way?
The river whispers in my ear
I've hardly a penny to my name
The heavens have never seemed so near
All my body glows with flame.
The tempest struggles in the air
And to myself alone I sing
It could sink me then and there
I can hear the echoes ring.
I tried to find one smilin' face

I don't suppose anyone wants to discuss the lyrics of Tell Ol' Bill in another thread (:hopeful)

Re: Tempest
I'm listening to the album
I'm liking it but I don't know what to think of his voice at some times yet
long and wasted years reminds me of something of his 80's stuff for some reason - a yes, brownsville girl

I'll see what I can do. If someone else wants to know it, ask me.
I have listened to it in a "superficial" way. And the lyrics take time for me to assimilate them into my system. But I like it a lot

Re: Tempest
I find 'Tempest' a little underwhelming to be honest. There is some nice songs but there are a few I can happily never hear again, which is a shame.

Which are the songs you never want to hear again? The long ones?
Narrow Way is the kind of pedestrian dullard that has become standard for a Dylan album. Early Roman Kings is pretty dull. Scarlet Town is OK I guess, but just strikes me as a poor man's Ain't Talkin. I've listened to the album quite a few times now, but still can't remember Tin Angel. Nonetheless, I enjoy Long and Wasted Years, Roll on John and Tempest. Can happily listen to Duquesne Whistle and Soon After Midnight, although they aren't remarkable. Which leaves Pay in Blood, not really sure what to make of that one. It sounds like 80s Dylan, which isn't a good thing, but at least it's different. I remain open to liking that song. I like his vocals on this album, but Christ, they are shockingly awful on Pay in Blood - in a fun way maybe....
Have you got any favourites?

Re: Tempest
I agree. It was Pay in Blood the one that shocked me for the vocals. And then I read some people said it was the best vocals in the album... But there are nice vocals on other tracks in the album. Like in Narrow Way - which I also agree is the same song that says nothing (Early Roman Kings is awful for me). Roll on John has my favorite vocals on the album (do you like them, pinhedz?). I like Long and Wasted years because it is simple, repetitive and short and it works well like that. Duquesne Whistle is niceLee Van Queef wrote:I like his vocals on this album, but Christ, they are shockingly awful on Pay in Blood - in a fun way maybe....
But I've only listened to the album the first few days after I got it. My interest dropped soon, maybe because I'm not in the mood. But I'll be listening to it some other time.

One of the first remarks I posted to Twitter about "Tempest" was: Dylan is becoming more & more like Tom Waits for me - I love it in theory, but my ears aren't quiet so fond of it.

As for the song 'Tempest': isn't there a law in fysics saying that anybody who keeps up a waltz for longer than 3:45 makes a fool out of himself?
It made me cringe to be frank.
