I've noticed that the avatar on the right covers up the right side of posted images, so I'd rather see it on the left.

My vote would be for avatars on the left: it's a confusing cultural shift to have to start reading a post from right to left in order to identify the author.

But SJ, didn't you state in a previous post that all kinds of IT-type complications might arise from making this (to me, at least) perfectly logical change?

It was most certainly not him. It is commonly attributed to Shakespeare in his play of the same name written in 1601 . However it was used in 1546 in a poem by John Heywood . However it is believed to even predate that and was in use as a probverb prior to that.
