Good news--there is now said to be another restaurant in Point-of-Rocks, Maryland, called "Aroma House." Very Happy

Google images reports as follows, suggesting that there are both edibles and potables:

Here's a condensed version of the trip. If this guy did it, how hard can it be?

5-star restaurants appear to be few and far between however.

And that--of course--was the 300-mile trip, not the 85-mile trip peddled last March.

Right now it's too hot--but October will be nice. Smile

If it doesn't rain. Neutral

One longstanding cause of anxiety was the infamous "Big Slackwater" storm washout, which destroyed part of the towpath in 1996, forcing bikers to take a 4.5-mile detour out on the highway, where they were potential roadkill. Neutral

So some senator found $9 million dollars lying around and put some guys to work (create jobs--that's the goal isn't it?):

I'm told that one can start this trip almost in Pittsburgh, a town named after an Englishman.

But I prefer to start in a town about 10 miles to the Southeast of Pittsburgh, called Duquesne.

Duquesne--and the lovely Macedonian maidens of Duquesne--hosted the Balalaika convention a few years ago. This was very hospitable of them, since--being mostly descendents of Philip the barbarian--they do not play balalaikas themselves:

Duquesne is known for it's extremely tilted railroad. I will no doubt be able to hear it's lonesome whistle blowing as I head out of town:

I would not have thought to call it that, but Wiki says that you are correct:

"The Duquesne Incline is an inclined plane railroad, or funicular, located near Pittsburgh's South Side neighborhood and scaling Mt. Washington. Designed by Samuel Diescher, the incline was completed in 1877 and is 800 feet (240 m) long, 400 feet (120 m) in height, and is inclined at a 30 degree angle. It is an unusual 5 ft (1,524 mm) gauge."

The bicycle (not to be confused with a "bike") is loaded, and I'll be heading out for Duquesne. rabbit
If I make it back, it should be next Saturday, and I'll either be crippled or more insufferable than ever.

Bon voyage! Enjoy!! Au revoir!!!

Funicular means a cable-hauled 'inclined plane' railway such as that at Duquesne (the first such ascended, iirc, Mt Vesuvius and got its name from the Italian for rope or string or some such). My first funicular was that on the cliffs at Aberystwyth, Mid-Wales.

A twin-track, funicular railway at the north end of Aberystwyth promenade. Substantial earthworks were necessary to construct the bank which carries the track at an approximately uniform gradient. The track itself has a 4ft 8in gauge and is 798ft long with a rise of 400ft. On it run two passenger cars, each with a capacity of 30 persons, which balance each other so that one car runs up the track as the other runs down. Both cars are attached to a continuous wire rope cable operated by an electric motor; until 1921, the railway was operated by a water balance system. The funicular was built for the Aberystwyth Improvement Company and opened on 1 August, 1896.

Tunnels--yes, there are many tunnels, because from Cumberland to DC the path follows an artificial waterway--the Chesapeake and Ohio Canal.

Mules had to pull barges through this tunnel (the "Paw Paw" tunnel), walking along the ledge on the right Shocked , and there are many others:
