That's a good one. I didn't know Linda Ronstadt was of Mexican decent. I jsut thought she sang Spanish language songs...like ABBA! Ha!

Who's better, Lou "the lamester" Bega, or Perez "ultra-cool" Prado?

Ry Cooder played Jelly Roll Morton for Ruben Gonzalez, and Ruben said "Habanera music--a little before my time."

The Habanera rhythm kicks in here at about 0:25:

We really need a link to the Joplin/Gottschalk thread here:

But we especially need this:

I like the movie, but I feel bad that there was not a single gringo that was simpático. Neutral

The morning paper has a big story on Bebo Valdés, including a bio and a picture.
I didn't realize that he not only played the music for Chico--he was Chico. Shocked

From what I understood in this video, they (the first one speaking I don't know who it is- the other is Trueba) were recording an album of Bebo and started thinking about recording it as a love story of a pianist and it ended up to really resemble Bebo (and it was Bebo who told them how things went by that time). So it seems Chico was formed from Bebo naturally, not as a planned thing

In the movie, the part of Estrella Morente is played by Estrella Morente:

Fun fact--Estrella Morente is the singing voice of Penelope Cruz in "Volver."

Evidently someone else had to sing the song, because Penelope only speaks Russian.

I believe that Jellyroll Morton called this style "The Spanish Tinge."

[Of course he meant Latino--not Spanish. ]
