Shocking news about fat Americans

In the paper today--the average white American male is 5'8" and weighs 199 pounds. Shocked

But in Washington DC it's 5'10" and 197 pounds. scratch

No wonder it's so easy to spot the tourists. Neutral

A comparatively recent phenomenon, the Fat Brit now seems to be an established part of the social scene. Does fast food have any bearing on this?

Fat children are particularly worrying.

The Okinawan diet might well amaze Americans. The average citizen consumes at least seven servings of vegetables daily, and an equal number of grains (in the form of noodles, bread, and rice—many of them whole grains). Add to this two to four servings of fruit, plus tofu and other forms of soy, green tea, seaweed, and fish rich in omega-3s (three times weekly). Sweet potatoes, bean sprouts, onions, and green peppers are prominent in the diet. Vegetables, grains, and fruits make up 72% of the diet by weight. Soy and seaweed provide another 14%. Meat, poultry, and eggs account for just 3% of the diet, fish about 11%. The emphasis is on dark green vegetables rich in calcium (Okinawans, like other Japanese, don't eat much dairy). Okinawans do drink alcohol, but women usually stick to one drink a day, while men average twice that. Moderation is the key.

In short, the average Okinawan's diet is far richer in complex carbohydrates and plant-based foods, and lower in fat, than the average American's.

These people are far from sedentary. Most practice martial arts and traditional Okinawan dance. They garden, they walk. Even at age 100, they look lean and healthy. Furthermore, they live comfortably and share the same spiritual and religious values, and the status of women is high LOL. The healthcare system is goooood and covers everybody. It may not be so easy, of course, to change to an Okinawan life-style. All your curd are belong to us.

Since 1976 the Japanese Ministry of Health has been studying older Okinawans (who live in traditional cultures presumably unaffected by the American presence), hoping to unlock the secrets of their amazing good health. What's most interesting about them is that they have the longest disability-free life expectancy in the world. Okinawa boasts the highest percentage of centenarians anywhere. Heart disease rates are low: 80% fewer heart attacks than Americans, and Okinawans who have heart attacks are more likely to survive. Breast and prostate cancer are so rare as to be unheard of among the older population. Obesity is equally rare. Smoking, the reader is led to conclude, is also rare among older Okinawans, though book cites no statistics.

The Okinawan cultural habit of calorie control called hara hachi bu......... which means eat only until you are 80% full.

Okinawans who adopt Western eating styles have similar rates of heart disease as in the US. Young Okinawans, eating more processed foods, have a higher risk of heart disease than their elderly relatives. A study of 100,000 Okinawans who moved to Brazil and adopted local eating habits, showed a life expectancy 17 years lower than in Okinawa.

Fat Americans......part of it could be attributed to all the many medications we are convinced (by doctors & TV) that we need.....the side effect that doesn't get mentioned (weight gain).

Plus eating "food" which has been processed and altered to the point of having little nutritional value.

If you consume more calories than you expend, you gain weight. It's not medicine that's making you fat, it's too much food and too little exercise.

In 1971, the first two cereals in the line were introduced, Count Chocula and the strawberry-flavored Franken Berry. Boo Berry, reputedly the first blueberry-flavored cereal, was released in 1973, and Fruit Brute the following year. Fruit Brute was discontinued by 1983 and replaced in 1987 by Fruity Yummy Mummy, which also had a short life as it was discontinued in the 1990s.

In the recent past, the three cereals still in circulation could be primarily found during the autumn months, in time for Halloween. According to a General Mills source, Count Chocula, Franken Berry, and Boo Berry are all produced year-round, making their seasonality an issue based on decisions made by retailers. As of late 2010, information such as nutrition data and historical factoids can still be found on the official General Mills website at all times of the year.

Though retired, Fruity Yummy Mummy and Fruit Brute still appear occasionally on official merchandise: in recent years, bobblehead dolls have been sold in their images.

The television commercials for the cereals usually featured the monsters competitively touting their own cereals to children, but would get frightened when anything interrupted their one-upmanship.

Beginning in 2011, Frankenberry, Boo Berry, and Count Chocula cereals will be manufactured and sold only for a few months during the fall/Halloween season. These cereals will not be made and sold the rest of the year (General Mills representative Kendall J. Powell at General Mills Inc. 1370 Orchard Road Montgomery, IL on June 15, 2011).

Health concerns

Franken Berry was very popular when first introduced possibly because the initial batches of the cereal used a dye that didn't break down in the body, causing many children's feces to be bright pink, a symptom sometimes referred to as "Frankenberry Stool."

I remember that the two main body types were said to be the "pear" and the "apple," with the pear-shape referring to accumulation of fat around the hips and thighs, and the apple-shape referring to the accumulation of fat in the belly hanging over the belt (this tends to pull the pants down, resulting in the unfortunate rear-view photos).

At one time, it was assumed that your body type was determined by genetics rather than life style, but now the pundits are calling the apple-shape "metabolic syndrome," and blaming it on a diet of beer and donuts.

One way to avoid those embarrassing rear views is to place the belt above the belly instead of below it, but this is usually only done in nursing homes.

I believe that the pear shape is also assessed to be associated with "subcutaneous fat" (fat right under the skin), which might actually be good for us, while the apple shape is associated with "visceral fat" (fat accumulated between the internal organs), which leads to diabetes and heart disease.

I just read that the American food industry produces enough calories for every American to get 3900 per day.

That's more than a body builder during the "bulking" phase.
