Slavery

Post  pinhedz on Sat Jan 28, 2012 10:49 am

Suppose that one morning Thomas Jefferson called his slaves together and said: "Slavery is a deplorable institution, therefore, as of this day you are all free!"

Which of the following would be the slaves' reaction?

-- Praise the Lord--we're free! cheers

or:

-- That's way harsh firing us all like that; did we do something wrong? How am I supposed to find another job? Neutral

There is already a slavery thread (but I couldn't add the poll there):

Why no third option: "Right Mr Jefferson, this plantation is now an anarcho-syndicalist collective. Here's your hoe"?

Is freedom a more attractive alternative?
That's the question all slaves need to ponder.

Free people can still be slaves, just not in the conventional sense.

I think it goes without saying that no slave wants a bad master, but that's the case with free people too.

Since this thread is about Thomas Jefferson's slaves, I assume this alludes to Sally Hemmings. I think the record will show that Sally's position in the Jefferson household was second to none, and she could never have found anything comparable as a freewoman.

Had she been "freed" by Jefferson, she probably would have been devastated, and would have been reduced to looking for work scrubbing floors or washing clothes.

What a sad fate for a lady of refined manners, learning, and accomplishments. Crying or Very sad

I have to say that I've never heard of the lady. That, in itself, might be significant.

Would this be an accurate biographical sketch, at all?:

Gold coast slave ship bound for cotton fields,
Sold in a market down in new orleans.
Scarred old slaver know he's doin alright.
Hear him whip the women just around midnight.
Ah brown sugar how come you taste so good
(a-ha) brown sugar, just like a young girl should
A-huh.

Drums beating, cold english blood runs hot,
Lady of the house wondrin where it's gonna stop.
House boy knows that he's doin alright.
You should a heard him just around midnight.
Ah brown sugar how come you taste so good
(a-ha) brown sugar, just like a black girl should
A-huh.

I bet your mama was a tent show queen, and all her boy
Friends were sweet sixteen.
Im no schoolboy but I know what I like,
You should have heard me just around midnight.

Ah brown sugar how come you taste so good
(a-ha) brown sugar, just like a young girl should.

I said yeah, I said yeah, I said yeah, I said
Oh just like a, just like a black girl should.

I said yeah, I said yeah, I said yeah, I said
Oh just like, just like a black girl should.

Sally Hemings had the good fortune to be born in America, rather than the Gold Coast. All of her descendants (born after Thomas Jefferson was widowed) have Jefferson DNA.

In the black community, the Jefferson-Hemings romance has long been considered a heartwarming love story.
