Could we have a clue, please? I've considered everyone from Jeremy Thorpe to Adolf Hitler.

The driver became an unfeasibly generous philanthropist.

Nope. He was a very British 20th century industrialist. His philanthropic gifts are still very much with us.

Nope. The 'bullnose' radiator of the car is a further clue.

lol!

No, not our Rich! (I recall his first Virgin record shop, above a shoe shop in Oxford Street, near Tottenham Court Road. A hangout for the cool and the hip of the day, with racks of bootlegs and - do I remember right? - beanbag cushions and headphones for a groovy shopping ... or not ... experience.)

The chap in the pic had close links with Oxford.

Depends pirat Young Bobby sang about Oxford Town, but it ain't that one.

The car and its bullnose radiator are a strong clue.

The following isn't a clue, but a Punch cartoon from 1936 I just found, captioned "The horn of plenty. Say when!" celebrating an enormous gift, from the chap in the bullnose-radiatored car, to Oxford University for medical research:

It's been calculated that he gave away over £11 billion at 2012 rates.

Eventually the sheer weight of the clues tips the scale--William Morris (later Lord Nuffield), in a Bullnose Morris, 1913, by kind permission of the Warden and Fellows of Nuffield College, Oxford.

^ cheers - you are, of course, correct!

(The 'bullnose' Morris Oxford would have given it away to any vintage British car buff, but I suppose they are rather thin on the ground hereabouts Laughing )
