This:
comes from DW Griffith's The Mothering Heart (1913)
Everybody can watch it here:
I'll do it later... and I'll come back

Re: Lillian Gish
Now that I've seen it I know why she has that look in her eyes. Very tragic.
There's an scene where she hides behind a tree
and you can only see her hands and you only know her reaction from her hands. That's beautiful.

"François Truffaut dedicated La Nuit Américaine (Day for Night, 1973), his most direct homage to the movies, to Lillian and Dorothy Gish"

Re: Lillian Gish
Was D.W. Griffith a racist?
I've been reading about Griffith movies today. I saw there are four of his films, all of them starring Lillian Gish, in the book I have titled 1001 you must see before you die (I haven't seen any... yet). And of course one of them is The Birth of a Nation. I guess that's a racist movie, at least everybody says so. But was he really a racist? He didn't make any movie close to that later (I read).
I want to see Intolerance. It was a response to all the controversy he created with Birth of a Nation. And the book says it's a very good film... and I trust the book

Re: Lillian Gish
I like this:
"Gish had the gift for externalizing [an] interior drama. ... [She had] the physical attributes and skill to convey softness, delicacy, and vulnerability readily; but she also suggests an implicit strength" - Blake Lucas
