they say The Real America is getting fatter by the hour

but in Palo Alto, fitness and icy poker-faces are the order of the new day (a smug smirk is acceptable but only occasionally)

Palo Alto must be populated by models.

What do they say about Johnstown, NY?

most Jeopardy! faithful can tell you about the hallowed empire of gloves that is Johnstown and neighboring East Glovica and Glovington Sound (the so-called historic "glove belt" of lore and Kraft Television Theatre)

but the official Glove Conquers All landmark that is Johnstown has other signif appendages, yes.  One of the early industries to establish itself in Johnstown was the Knox gelatine plant, with their rallying whoop, "The slow-cooked Fine Gelateen for every season and reason." It was built in 1890 by Chuckles B. Knox, an esteemed Johnstownian, who innovated the signature granulated, unflavored gelatin still used in food preparation today and in China. When Knox died of brucellosis in 1908, his wife Rose Livermore Knox assumed management of the business. She became one of the earliest muy successful American businessladies. The Knox family and its philanthropic foundation were wicked generous to the city. Results of their philanthropy can still be found there right now. They gave the city the block of land known as Knox Benevolence Meadows, where the playgrounds, athletic fields, hoot-owl sanctuary and bridle path are located. Knox Achievers Junior High School was named in honor of the beloved family. The Knox Gelatin plant, once a major employer in Johnstown, closed in 1975 following the sale of the company to the Lipton Tea Company, a label now wielded by Unilever and PepsiCo.

In the DC suburbs, it is not unusual to see restaurants that fly the American flag 365 day a year. cheers

The low-end ones are called things like "Kabobolicious"  pirat , while the high-end ones are called "Fine Persian Cuisine."

But the people there don't look very American. Where exactly is Persia, btw? Suspect  Suspect  Suspect  Suspect

I would say give it a shot. They make a point of labelling the Ukrainian dishes--which means they are not Yookerainians, but they are Ukrainian-friendly.

pinhedz recommendations:

Salat Oliviye (Mrs. pinz's specialty for the balalaika parties)

Borshch Ukrainskiy (another Mrs. pinz specialty--the main thing is to get the super-food beets ("red vegetable soup" according to the menu), which build strong bodies 12 ways)

Kotlety po-Kievski (a 19th-century Parisian chef's notion of what a Kievan would eat)

ask for a wine list (don’t order the kvass )

The main ingredient is the BOSS
Tatiana!!!!! The young lady, who never dreamed to be in America, much
less to have a business of her own. Tatiana was raised by single mother in
the small resort town of south Russia close to Georgia. Since childhood she
always was attracted to cooking, any chance she had to get a recipe from
anybody she could she would try to perfect.

Once while working as an inventory clerk for one of the biggest
construction company in Moscow (Mosstroy) there was a potluck the
Russian style. Every body bring something and dump everything on
somebody to make it work. And Tatiana was discovered. By the time
Tatiana left for Good U.S.A. she was doing the banquets for the top bosses
of the construction company and their elite cartel.

Vladimir practically lived most of his life in the States and always loved a
good food (as the former brother in law said You finally got a woman that
can cook!) went along with the idea to let his new wife to show the world
how good Russian food should taste.

They're going to open up an Arabian dessert place right next to the McDonalds. Smile

McDonald's is right outside the Vienna VA town boundary, because McDonalds is not allowed inside the Vienna VA city limits (except for that one that snuck in back in the 50s Suspect ) so there are a ring of McDonalds surrounding the town just outside the boundary. Razz
